Some of the most common questions I get from people approaching 65 are usually concerning when to enroll in Medicare, and how to avoid penalties. It is important to understand and be aware of the enrollment rules. To start, there are several questions to consider.
Do you have to sign up for Medicare when you turn 65? The answer is, it depends.
Do you pay a penalty if you don’t enroll in Medicare when you are eligible? Again, the answer is, it depends. What if you keep working past 65 and are receiving healthcare coverage? The answer is, again, it depends.
Generally, if you have credible coverage, you may choose to delay enrolling in Medicare with no penalties. However, there are some exceptions to this as well. Also, sometimes Medicare is a better option than your current healthcare. Again, it depends.
The bottom line is that when it comes to Medicare, there are a lot of rules. Many of the rules are to protect you but it is always good to check with someone because everyone’s situation is unique.
If you are wondering whether you need to enroll or not, please call me. You can make an appointment if you are about to enter the Medicare world or have questions about your situation. I would love to be your guide.
