Those in the know say short and cool is the new look for summer.
“The boy cut is the newest trend, sporting short, boyish bangs and the ears cut out, but with a feminine feel,” said Sandra Barbetta, owner, with husband, Cosmo, of Cosmos Salon and Day Spa. As an example, she cites actress Michelle Williams’ look at the recent Oscars.
Edgy textured pixies like Halle Berry’s newest style are also very in, she related. The bob also has gone shorter with a higher stack in the back and boy bangs in front, “Short hair is great for summer, especially if you do a lot of swimming, hiking and sports,” Sandra said.
But don’t count out medium and longer styles. Medium styles are taking on a softer, loosely textured look “Keep it loose, no scrunching,” Sandra said. “Take it easy with your hair dryer and flat iron. Just smooth it a little, and don’t completely straighten your look. With all the Arizona summer heat, your hair can use a break in the styling department.” Sandra suggests using heat protective sprays and oils when using hot tools, and controlling frizz with sprays and conditioners instead of over ironing.
Long locks never go out of style, but need a little extra care in summer. “Fishtail braids are a really popular look that can remove any bad hair days,” Sandra suggested. “You can also wear your longer hair half up and half down.”
Summer is also a fun time, when you can do zany, wild looks with your hair. “Really popular now are precious-metal streaks for highlights,” Sandra said. “Also, musician Steven Tyler started a trend of adding feathered and jeweled extensions to decorate his hair. We can do those, and you can even shampoo with them in. It’s great.”
New summer colors also are popping up for Shellac nails. The most requested are Hot Pop Pink, Traditional French for fingers, and for toes, Rosebud and Tropical (coral).
Sandra’s tips for summer hair protection include wearing big, floppy sun hats—very stylish. In addition, braiding hair before going swimming keeps more of it away from sun and chlorine. She also suggests putting a conditioner in your hair first.
If you should experience the horror of having the pool turn your hair green, don’t panic. “We have Malibu, a great shampoo and crystal gel treatment, which takes the green out and removes minerals and deposits from the hair,” Sandra said. She also suggests using a good hair moisturizer, such as J Beverly Hills. “We also have a total summer skin-care packet, and Dermalogica sun-protective wipes.”
And don’t forget Dad on Father’s Day. “The man of the house also appreciates a hot new look, too,” said Sandra. “He might like a haircut and color, or he may prefer a massage and spa treatments.”
