There is likely a psychological roadblock hindering the success in a high percentage of people, according to Tri 2B Fit owner Kelly Barnes. She has developed comprehensive programs, which address the physical and psychological aspects of weight loss and exercise in what she hopes will become the future model of the fitness training industry.
Her Mesa studio is not a gym, and it is not just a place where you go to workout with a personal trainer. While it can be just that, she offers so much more. Kelly has created her dream job, which combines her passion for fitness and sports with exercise psychology. As an athlete with a master’s degree in kinesiology/sport psychology, as well as specialized training in exercise physiology, Kelly learned the fact combining the physical and mental aspects of exercise and fitness was the missing link preventing many people from achieving their goals. “Research has shown exercise affects cognitive functioning,” Kelly said, “and it helps to quiet the part of the brain triggering depression and anxiety.”
Tri 2B Fit offers individualized programs, which include a comprehensive assessment of body composition, strength, posture, diet, cardiovascular fitness and goal setting. “We offer a full view of all the factors related to exercise and fitness and then design a program to fit your unique lifestyle and needs,” said Kelly. The program can include components, such as personal training, exercise, dietary recommendations, weight-loss coaching, fitness classes and endurance training.
Her clients include people who have not found success in other programs or typical gym/fitness settings, beginner and novice athletes and triathlon participants. Fitness professionals with degrees and training in sports exercise and physiology staff the programs.
Kelly grew up in a small town in New York, and has become a local fitness icon and advocate when she recently competed in a nearby Ironman event and spoke to the community about the importance of health and fitness. She has worked hard to bring a sense of close-knit community to her Mesa business, creating an environment in which people can feel at home. “We have a place where people can feel comfortable and supported whether they are trying to lose weight, get in better shape or are training for a triathlon,” explained Kelly.
Her business has been open for one year and is based mostly on referrals. Kelly has big plans for growth, however. “I hope to build on what we’ve already created by starting much-needed triathlon groups for women and being able to educate the community on fitness, exercise and weight loss,” Kelly stated.
Tri 2B Fit is located at 6740 E. University Drive (east of Recker Road).
