Summer presents its own set of problems for taking care of our hair.
“Hair can be damaged a million different ways, whether it’s a long swim in a pool or improper hair coloring,” said Sandra Barbetta, co-owner with husband Cosmo of Cosmos Salon and Day Spa. “Even if we have the best intentions, when it comes to hair damage, we are often clueless about the effects some everyday actions can have on our vulnerable strands.”
Sandra listed a few examples of what causes hair damage:
Water—Pools, spas, ocean water and even your shower all have minerals that can deposit and stick to hair like a magnet. Excessively hot water is damaging, too.
Heat—From hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons and hot rollers. Hair is a fiber and can be destroyed by the overuse of heat. A flat iron, set to 400 degrees, can literally melt hair.
Excessive hair color—Over-lightening hair can cause porous hair and breakage.
Friction—Brushing with a hairbrush with improper bristles can get hair all tangled up.
“We feel that educating our clients is a must here at Cosmos,” Sandra explained. “A big part of having wonderful, healthy hair in Arizona is proper shampooing and conditioning to induce shine and hydration into the hair. We recommend the use of a clarifying shampoo, like our salon favorite, Malibu,” she continued. “The Malibu shampoo will naturally cleanse and protect hair against damage or discoloration without using harsh chemicals, and prevents the buildup of minerals from water. Our staff is expert with Malibu treatments to de-stress your tresses.”
Short styles are always easier in summer, but don’t count out medium and longer styles. “Keep it loose, no scrunching,” Sandra said. “Take it easy with your hair dryer and flat irons. Just smooth it a little, don’t completely straighten your look. With all the Arizona summer heat, your hair can use a break in the styling department.” Sandra suggests using heat protective sprays and oils when using hot tools, and controlling frizz with sprays and conditioners instead of over-ironing.
Big, floppy sun hats always are very stylish, too.
According to Sandra, to spare your hair from chlorine green, braid it before going swimming to keep more of it away from sun and chlorine. Put a conditioner in your hair first.
“If you should experience the horror of having your hair turn green, don’t panic,” Sandra said. “We use a great shampoo and crystal gel treatment that takes the green out and removes minerals and deposits from the hair.” She also suggests using a good hair moisturizer.
“Don’t forget about your skin,” Sandra advised. “Cosmos carries a full line of Dermalogica skincare and sun care products. Try their Sheer Tint, with a built-in SPF 20, which is great for women on the go.”
