In the New Year, we all try to start off right on our health, our activities and our home, so right now is a good time to check out your backyard pool to make sure it will do well this year.
“If you’re not heating your pool, or you don’t use your pool as much in the colder months, now is the best time of year for doing pool maintenance,” said Chris Quam, owner of Arizona Pool Guy Inc. “Especially if you live in a neighborhood built before the year 2000, your pool probably is due for refinishing. You can tell if you see chips, puckering or stains in the finish. Those are all indications it needs to be redone.”
The same goes for decks. “After time, the finish begins to erode, causing unsightly peeling. Cracks or chips not only look bad, but can cause cuts or stumbles,” Chris warned.
Pool Maintenance Checklist
Other pool maintenance should be done on a regular timeline. Chris offers this maintenance checklist as a guide to pool owners:
- Every year—clean cartridge filters and diatomaceous earth (DE) filter grids.
- Two to three years—drain and refill pool with fresh water.
- Three to four years—replace cartridge filters and DE filter grids.
- Five to seven years—complete sand replacement in sand filters.
- 10 to 15 years—refinish pool surface.
“If you think your pool might be due for some maintenance, or you need someone to check out your pool’s finish, deck repair or filtering equipment, call Arizona Pool Guy,” said Chris. “We are happy to give free estimates on any work needed. We also can install a heating system, so you can enjoy swimming for the rest of the winter season.”
