A 10-week class covering the Spanish you need to know to communicate successfully will be sponsored by the Mesa Active Adult Center, 247 N. Macdonald St., from Feb. 7 to April 4.
Mesa resident Sonia Dillehay, a native of La Serena, Chile, together with longtime Spanish teacher Chuck Smith, of Tempe, teach each two-hour class, taught from 10 a.m. to noon (beginner level), and from 1 to 3 p.m. (advanced level), on Thursdays.
The $75 fee and $15 cost of the lesson/workbook is incorporated into an experience, including conversation and Loteria—a game similar to Bingo, which builds vocabulary. In addition, homework assignments and other interactive sessions encourage communication among students.
Sonia, a native-Spanish speaker, holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Chile. She recently retired after serving for many years as activities director at the Sirrine Day Care Center in Mesa.
Chuck received his Bachelor of Science in community journalism from California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Chile in the late 1960s, and has taught Spanish since 1971.
