And, they’re off! These infamous words highlighted a fun-filled afternoon for the Red Mountain Ranch Social Club on Saturday, May 6.
More than 30 members attended a party hosted by fellow club member Ferne Zabezensky to celebrate the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby.
Arriving hours before the race, the guests had plenty of time to study the field of horses participating in the race, the history of the animals, along with the owners and jockeys. Of course, to truly get into the spirit of the day, the traditional Mint Julep was served, along with an appetizing array of hors d’oeuvres and dessert. Much socializing accompanied the lead-up to the big race.
Obviously, it just wouldn’t have been a traditional Derby Day if the ladies in attendance hadn’t worn their finest in millinery splendor. Hats bedecked with all variety of flower, feather and frilly accessory lent an air of elegance coupled with frivolity. There were prizes for the most classic and the most creative hats worn respectively by Allyn Bransby and Martha Stephens.
By the time of the race, all the partygoers had chosen their favorites, placed their bets and waited for the final outcome. Watching the actual race on TV created just the right atmosphere of suspense—at least all the suspense a two-minute event can provide. One could almost envision being there in Louisville, Ky., rather than Mesa, Ariz., watching the horses run the distance on a very sloppy track.
All in all, it was decided the Kentucky Derby was a great way to finish off a great year for the Red Mountain Ranch Social Club. Those in attendance also agreed to repeat the event at the same time next year.
If you would like more information about joining the social club, come to one of the meetings on the second Thursday of the month, at 9:30 a.m., in the Red Mountain Room of the Red Mountain Ranch Country Club.
