With plenty of myths floating around regarding proper car maintenance, some are based on truth, some were true at one time and others are just plain bad information.
Here are some of the most common:
Myth You should set your tire pressure to the number on the side of the tire.
Reality The number on the side of the tire is the maximum pressure the tire is rated to handle safely. You want to set your pressure according to your vehicle’s recommended pressure. This information is found on a sticker on the driver’s door opening.
Myth As long as I can see the tread, my tires are fine.
Reality As your tires wear, they lose their ability to grip the road and funnel rain water away when driving. If you look closely, you will see wear tabs in your tread. These indicate when the tire is past its useful life and needs to be replaced.
Myth If my car only requires 87 octane, using 91 will improve my performance.
Reality Higher octane fuel burns at a higher temperature to prevent pre-ignition on higher compression engines. Although it will not hurt to use it, there also will not be any gains either.
Myth The engine needs to warm up a few minutes before driving.
Reality Yes, this was true at one time. However, today’s modern vehicles have sophisticated engine management systems that adjust for the running temperature. So, there is little to no warm-up time needed.
Myth If my brake light is on and the fluid is low, I just need to top it off.
Reality Your brake fluid reservoir is designed so the fluid level lowers as your brake pads wear. When the level gets low enough to turn on your brake light, you should have your brake system inspected for worn pads or a possible leak.
Myth I only need to follow my manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule to properly maintain my car.
Reality Your manufacturer’s maintenance schedule is the minimum requirements to keep your car maintained in perfect driving condition and to hopefully outlast the warranty period. There always will be footnotes about abnormal or severe driving conditions, which will require a more aggressive schedule. Today’s vehicles are designed to last much longer, and performing your preventive maintenance in a timely manner will extend your vehicle’s life and lower your overall cost of ownership.
