Self Development Charter School, located in Northeast Mesa, received an Award for Academic Excellence from the Arizona Department of Education in June.
Self Development was the only school in Mesa (public or charter) to be given the coveted award for overall achievement. Schools were evaluated over a six-year period on multiple criteria by the state.
“I am constantly on the lookout for programs providing breakthrough results in the classrooms and at schools, which lead to increased student achievement,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal.
“The Arizona Department of Education’s 2011 Excellence Awards will help shine a spotlight on those districts and charter schools with high student academic growth and achievement so superintendents, charter holders, administrators, principals, and teachers from around the state can learn from their successes,” Superintendent Huppenthal added.
This award follows closely on the heels of the Charter School of the Year award presented to Self Development Charter School in the fall of 2010 by the Arizona Charter Schools Association.
The school currently is building the new Science and Technology Center to enhance programs in math, science and technology for grades four through eight. This new curriculum is part of Principal Anjum Majeed’s philosophy of “providing a well-rounded education and implementing higher-level critical thinking skills to facilitate future student success.”
The Science and Technology Center will open this fall. The school is adding two more classrooms to its expanding middle school program. Also, additions to the campus this fall include a rubberized jogging track and large playground equipment for students to develop a lifelong habit of physical exercise as a part of their daily routines.
