This past November, Self Development Academy (SDA) honored Major Jon Norman of the United States Air Force.
Major Norman, a SDA parent, has served our country in the United States Air Force since 2003. On Oct. 9, Major Norman, serving as aircraft commander, completed a combat air-to-air refueling mission supporting aircraft in active combat as he flew over Iraq aboard PYTHON 05, a KC-135 Stratotanker.
During the flight, Major Norman, along with two other members of the United States Air Force, dedicated an American flag to SDA. The flag is a symbol of the military’s dedication and commitment to protecting our country’s liberties and freedoms. Now, the school proudly displays the flag in the Front Office.
As the school community came together in a school-wide assembly to thank Major Norman and recognize all active service men and women and veterans, there was an overwhelming sense of pride.
During the assembly, student government officers led the school in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and faculty member Mrs. Tici Smith sang the National Anthem. The significance of the mission and flag were shared with the entire school community.
Following the assembly, several students asked for Major Norman’s autograph and asked to speak with him. Other students shared about their family members’ military service experiences, as well. As we celebrated Veterans Day, SDA remembered and thanked all active service men and women and veterans.
