The Red Mountain Ranch Social Club members have jumped into the fall season by participating in a variety of activities. The Social Club members have engaged in exciting and rewarding educational, entertainment, and community benefit events.
PREVIOUS EVENTS
The Oct. 10 meeting featured a fascinating and very moving presentation by Dr. Dirk Van Leenen, who was born in 1940 in the Netherlands. He is an author, Holocaust survivor, and has been a Mesa resident for over 30 years.
Dr. Van Leenen shared many personal and touching stories, reviewing his experiences of growing up during World War II and living through the invasion of Holland. His father was Christian and his mother was Jewish.
Dr. Van Leenen was just three years old when he would ride with his father, a Dutch resistance fighter, carrying counterfeit IDs packed into layers of his clothing. They helped more than 1,000 Jews by finding places for them to hide, to avoid being arrested by the Nazi soldiers, and sent to the concentration camps in Germany.
Dr. Van Leenen has written three books: Resistance on a Bicycle, The Americans are Coming and The Last Train to the Concentration Camp.
The Social Club members had yet another opportunity to gain new knowledge during a guided tour of one of the top-rated attractions in the area, the Commemorative Air Force Museum, on Thursday, Sept. 19. The group learned how airplanes were used throughout the history of combat.
The museum is home to authentic war artifacts and hundreds of exhibits that chronicle the stories of people who rose to meet extraordinary challenges.
