Poppy’s Home Décor is like a candy store, full of good stuff, including lamps, mirrors, art, furniture, stationary (the greeting cards are hilarious), leather goods, clothing and jewelry—there is a huge variety of all sorts of items, not just home accessories.
Owner and head designer Susan Haviland has been bringing beautiful objects to the Valley for the past eight years. Originally from Cache Valley, Utah, she has made Arizona her home for 25 years, raising four sons along the way. The impetus to open Poppy’s came from wanting to provide an alternative to some of the higher end accessory stores. “I wanted to provide reasonably priced, lovely objects,” Susan said, “and give people a nice place to come and shop for them.”
Full interior design service is offered, including lighting, flooring, custom bedding, draperies and specialty paint finishes. “Pulling it altogether, that’s the secret,” Susan said with a smile. “My focus is entirely on the client. Some of the biggest factors include the fact people are afraid of brightness, boldness and color,” she continued. “Sometimes, people get stuck. They are in a rut. We help them re-define their style with a pop of color here, a change of light fixture there. Sometimes it is as simple as that.”
With each unique in individual tastes, there is no typical client. “My job is to find out what they really like,” Susan said, “and the biggest reward is when they call me to say how much they love their house.”
“At Poppy’s,” she added, “we want to give each person who comes through the door special attention, as well as a great selection and even better prices.”
Susan recently returned from markets in Dallas and Las Vegas, where she found the current design trend forecast, which is for clean lines, paring down something that can apply equally to contemporary, traditional or transitional interiors. Additionally, the color for 2013 is emerald. “This actually means a wide spectrum ranging from lime to dark green,” Susan said.
One of the biggest branches of the business is floral design. Not just the artificial variety, but beautiful, fresh flowers, which Poppy’s designers can arrange into creative displays for weddings, funerals and school functions, as well as for festive seasonal arrangements.
If shopping makes you hungry, look no further than the in-house restaurant, Piccadilly Square, to revive yourself. Order from the soup, sandwich and sweets menu, all made from their own special recipes. Penny Lane, the best selling sandwich, consists of chicken salad with cashews and pineapples served on a croissant. Tempting after-lunch treats include cookies, cupcakes and Scotcheroos. The eating space also plays host to corporate events and bridal showers if you’re looking for a unique location for a party or gathering.
Service is the name of the game, and Susan is anxious to please her growing legion of fans with new products and innovative ideas. “I am very grateful to all my customers who have supported Poppy’s over the years,” she said.
With spring in the air, now is the perfect time to visit this unique business. It could be inspirational.
