The 2021-22 school year is underway at Mesa Public Schools. Students are discovering new passions, building lifelong friendships, and participating in a variety of exciting activities.
Last year, grandparents were instrumental in helping students through a challenging year, and the district wants to ensure these important relationships continue to flourish.
The Mesa Public Schools gold card provides a great opportunity for grandparents to connect with busy students by supporting them in the concert hall, on the playing field, and in the theatre.
The gold card provides senior citizens the opportunity to enjoy free or discounted admission to plays, concerts, and musical theater and sporting events sponsored by Mesa Public Schools. The cards are free to residents within Mesa Public Schools boundaries who are aged 62 or older. Spouses are also eligible, regardless of age.
Now that fall sports are in full swing, it’s a wonderful opportunity for our senior community to engage with their grandchildren and support students. It’s also important to consider the weather when attending a game.
“It’s always special when grandparents come and watch their grandchildren play,” shared Tommy Eubanks, director of athletics. “It can still be hot outside during the fall sports season, so we encourage everyone to prepare for the heat.”
To ensure supporters are comfortable during games, Tommy recommends finding shaded areas and advises to remember to pack items including water, a hat and sunscreen, a seat cushion, and proper footwear for navigating bleachers. Grandparents will also want to make sure their phones are charged so they can catch photos of their grandchildren in action.
Jake Riemenschneider is the proud grandparent of current and former Dobson Mustangs. He is 88 years young and shares a love of football with his grandson, Jordan, who is a quarterback for the school. He says it feels wonderful to watch his grandchildren excel.
“The most important thing is teaching players to do their best and practice good sportsmanship,” Jake said. “It feels great to watch Jordan throw a good pass, and then it’s up on your feet to cheer him on. Children need all the encouragement and support that we can give them.”
