Dental care has always been frustrating for people on Medicare. Medicare doesn’t cover most dental care, including procedures and supplies like cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, dentures, dental plates, or other dental devices.
Original Medicare may pay for some dental services that are closely related to other covered medical services, but this leaves most Medicare beneficiaries with the issue of how to cover their dental costs. However, in the past couple of years, more and more Medicare Advantage plans are now including dental coverage, and this year, the coverage is better than ever.
Many plans have $0 co-insurance for cleanings and basic care such as fillings. It is encouraging to see that this is finally available in Medicare plans. However, the issue of dental coverage still exists with those people that have Original Medicare and a Supplement. Supplements do not include dental insurance.
But there is also good news on this front. There is a brand-new plan that will begin in October of this year that is specifically designed for people on a Medicare Supplement. It is a UHC Dental, Vision, and Hearing plan that allows you to use your benefit for any of these needs. The excellent news is also that there is no waiting period. Meaning, once you join the plan, you can use your benefit immediately for any dental service (other than implants), vision, or hearing expenses.
This plan can only be purchased through a licensed agent. So, if this is something you are interested in, please contact your agent or me for more information.
As always, please call me to make an appointment if you are about to enter the Medicare world or have questions about your situation. I would love to be your guide.
