Education would be missing something fantastic without teachers like Mr. Whitehead.
Mr. Orcutt, a parent whose two children, Jack and Julia, had been in Mr. Whitehead’s classroom, knew this Fremont Junior High School teacher was something extraordinary. In appreciation, he nominated Mr. Whitehead for Teacher of the Month.
Arizona home builder Taylor Morrison, in partnership with radio station KEZ 99.9, sponsored the Teacher of the Month competition, which was
the first step. From there, KEZ radio personality Marty Manning chose Mr. Whitehead as Educator of the Year.
What is engaging about Mr. Whitehead’s classroom is his energy and commitment to the students. His style of teaching is hands-on, project-based and interactive. He empowers the students to be motivated to take ownership of their learning.
With community and rapport infusing the room, the study of history comes alive and becomes relevant in his classroom. Extending his expertise and talents beyond the school day to teach the students to make a difference and give back is something he is known for at Fremont. Service projects, the Washington, D.C. trip coordinator and a charity concert, as well as the recycling group, keep this teacher busy.
Prior to finding out he won Teacher of the Month, he thought he was in trouble when the principal walked in his classroom. With Mr. Whitehead’s students so engaged in their learning, they didn’t notice the two men, Mr. Roberts and Marty. The school, the community and the students all are proud of him.
When the recognition was posted on the district’s Facebook, Lynda Jordan said, “The district has never seen so many likes for a post.” It’s no wonder Mr. Whitehead is well liked and beyond deserving.
“I am the guide,” Mr. Whitehead said, “and I love what I do.”
Thank you to Taylor Morrison and KEZ 99.9 for celebrating the powerful and life-changing impact Mr. Whitehead and teachers like him have on the world of teaching.
