The Las Sendas Quilt Club is proud to announce a group-made quilt, entered this past November into the Rim Country Quilt Roundup in Payson, won several prizes, including a first place ribbon in the group category.
This was the first time the club had ever entered a quilt in a juried show. In addition to the first place ribbon, the quilt won another ribbon for the best use of color in the show, a third ribbon given by the Shoofly Quilt Guild and a fourth ribbon for being voted the favorite quilt in the show.
Club member Cheri Maniz was also awarded a third place ribbon for her Strawberry Lemonade quilt in the innovative quilt category. Audrey Good also received a third place ribbon for her pictorial quilt entitled San Xavier del bac.
In addition to the ribbons, monetary prizes also were awarded.
The Red Mountain quilt’s unique beginning as a painting began in May, when club member Audrey Good made a 36-inch by 48-inch painting of Red Mountain. The painting was then cut into 12 12-inch square segments, which were given to 12 club members. The square they received was theirs to interpret into a 12-inch quilt block, using fabric, threads and embellishments of their choice. No one really knew how the others would look until they were completed in August, when it was time to assemble them into the quilt. The window frame effect, called sashing in the quilt world, was added between the blocks, and an outer border finished the quilt.
Club members making the 12 blocks were Jenny Ballway, Penny Camillone, JoAnn Gannon, Audrey Good, Jan Gradle, Gilly Hufsmith, Cheri Maniz, Marti Meyers, Terry Parsons, Karen Plante, Roberta Rothstein, and Merdyth Stump. Adding to those were Jeanne Copeland, Laure Mitterholf, Annette Okin, Linda Schoeppach, Lois Smith and Carol Vacca, who helped assemble the quilt. Club member Jody Driver did the beautiful machine quilting.
The Red Mountain quilt will be on display in the upcoming annual quilt show on March 25, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Trailhead Members Club.
