Sandy Barbetta, known around the Valley as hairstylist to TV celebrities, was actually the one on camera when KTVK-3TV aired a story on the men’s hair restoration research project she conducted at Cosmos Salon and Day Spa.
This past July, Sandy, salon co-owner with husband, Cosmo, decided to set up an experiment to test the new hair restoration product line, from American Crew, to see how well it worked on men with various stages of hair loss. Sandy checked around with her clients, and found three brave guys willing to do the test.
Meanwhile, Cosmo had been experimenting with the products on his own hair, as well. “The whole thing is doing great all around the hairline,” he concluded.
KTVK-3TV producer Bobbi Jo Kelly got wind of the idea, and decided to do a before and after story about it. She enlisted the participation of Good Morning Arizona Senior Producer Tyson Milanovich.
“Sandy has done segments with 3TV for years, but almost always with women,” Tyson said. “They were looking for volunteers, and our producer, who set up the segment, immediately thought of volunteering me, since I’m follically challenged.” While taking part in the study himself, Tyson interviewed Sandy and the participants. All the men were videotaped before the test, and they were given products to use at home.
Cameraman Gibby Parr shot Tyson’s interviews with Sandy and the participants, as well as Tyson’s responses about his own experience.
After about two months of using the American Crew products daily—shampoo, serum, foam hair styler and patches—the men came back to the salon for the after shoot during the last week in September. They each described their personal results.
Tyson, who sports a short-shaved head, was fairly happy with the results. “It’s not like it grows shoulder-length hair, but more like a peach fuzz over the entire head,” he said. “It was easy using products I would normally use.”
Tom Foss, a REALTOR® with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty in Scottsdale, had heard about the project from his wife, Linda, a long time client of Sandy’s. He had the least thinning of all the participants.
Following the trial, Tom thought his hair seemed thicker overall, with some increased growth in the middle part, which had been thinning. “You have to wash your hair anyway,” he said. “So, it’s easy to just use this restoration shampoo, and rub in the serum and foam styler before combing.” Tom uses the patches at night on his receding hairline. “It’s sometimes harder to remember to do the patches,” he admitted.
Mesa resident Ryan Krenz, age 24, lamented the fact early male-pattern baldness runs in his family, and his hair started thinning when he was 19 or 20. He noticed the products seemed to widen the cuticle of his hair, which made it look fuller and added volume. “It seemed to grow faster, too,” Ryan said.
He also liked the fact the products are all natural, as he was concerned about the possible side effects of some hair restoration formulas. ‘It even smells good,” Ryan admitted. He admitted to not wanting to show up at work at Honeywell smelling like something medicinal. Since the patches work best for dormant roots, and not Ryan’s form of early male-pattern baldness, he didn’t use them.
“All the participants in the study rated the products as a 9 on a 1-to-10 scale,” Sandy exclaimed. “We’ve been seeing some amazing results with these treatments. The best part is it is made with all natural ingredients,” she continued. “You don’t even need a prescription to use it, and it’s very affordable.”
