What’s that I see twinkling in the distance? Why, it looks like some Four Peaks Amethyst crystals sparkling on the Southern horizon.
Yes, it’s that time of year again when the City of Tucson plays host to the famed Tucson Gem Show.
From late January to mid-February, Tucson is home to more than 40 individual trade shows devoted to the gem and mineral trade. One of the largest and most prestigious gem shows in the world, the renowned Tucson Gem and Mineral Show dates back to 1955. It attracts more than 1,300 vendors from 49 states and 32 countries.
The additional shows developed in the ensuing years have contributed another 2,700 vendors to the mix. From fossils to fine jewelry, and gems to geodes, there’s certainly something to feed everyone’s inner rock hound.
Most of the shows, including the original Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, are open to the public, while some shows are open only to those with a qualified business license and industry credentials.
Some of the show’s highlights spotted last year included a 1-carat Natural Blue Diamond, valued at $150,000, a 6-carat Paraiba Tourmaline and Diamond ring valued at $140,000, and a 14-foot-tall Amethyst cathedral that was so heavy a forklift was required to move it.
While you may or may not have an interest in gems and minerals, you might have acquired or inherited some gems or minerals, or even an interesting collection that has appreciated in value. It’s always a good idea to have a trained eye take a look at your treasure, so you can Know Before You Throw (or sell). So, what’s in your rock garden?
