Downsizing? Determined to get rid of stuff no longer needed? Cleaning out a home or an estate? Stop! Know Before You Throw.
A few months ago, I invited you to tell me about your collections. Well, this month’s collector is enamored with Persian rugs. You might say she rolled out the red carpet for me with her collection. (Sorry, but I just couldn’t pass that up.)
What people call Persian rugs often refers to a broad range of hand-knotted rugs from the Middle East and the Orient. These areas of the world have a long history of rug weaving, with many displaying bold colors and patterns unique to their village or nomadic tribe. An authentic Persian rug would be one woven in the country of Iran.
Rug weaving dates back thousands of years. But given the fragile, organic nature of the materials used, and the fact that these rugs generally saw a great deal of use, few survive that are more than a couple of hundred years old.
Many factors impact value, including region of origin, condition, design and knots per square inch, to name a few. Some of the regions that produced desired fine rugs are Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Nain and Qom. While some of these rugs can cost tens of thousands of dollars, lesser grade rugs can be purchased for a few hundred dollars. These affordable rugs are quite beautiful and complementary to many different styles of furniture, allowing for the enjoyment of these lovely, handcrafted works of art for our floors.
The collection that inspired this month’s article was a variety of colors and bold patterns, which complemented her furniture quite nicely. We actually sold this collector’s home a few weeks ago, so you can view all of her rugs by visiting SunlandLiving.com online and clicking on the (photo) Gallery.
Thank you so much for sharing your area of collecting with me. Please let me know about your interesting collection, as I would love the opportunity to feature it in an upcoming article.
