Downsizing? Determined to get rid of stuff you no longer need? Cleaning out your parents’ home or an estate? Stop. Know Before You Throw.
It’s always a good idea to have a trained eye determine if there may be value in what you want to toss.
For example, I got a call from a family member who was cleaning out Grandma’s house, and they had already thrown out two dumpsters full of trash in order to make it easier for the professional to come in and determine the value of what was left.
After our consultation, what was most startling and disturbing to the family was the fact they had just thrown away two dumpsters of vintage travel brochures and other collectible ephemera—the very items having more value than what was not thrown away. Basically, the family just spent hundreds of dollars to have thousands of dollars dumped in the landfill.
If you find yourself about to throw, protect yourself by consulting someone with experience, so you don’t suffer the same kind of loss.
