Self Development Charter School (SDCS) is excited to share its second-grade students’ participation in a special Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program, offered by Intel.
Vimbai Mhungu, an employee of Intel/Internet of Things Solution Group, leads Intel’s Supply Chain Outreach program at SDCS. To facilitate the program, he has enlisted a group of enthusiastic volunteers from Intel.
So far, the grade-two students have participated in two workshops entitled Intel Fab Day and LEGO Car Manufacturing. Both workshops focused on supply chains. During the first workshop, students learned about sand science, the process of making Intel chips from sand. The second workshop focused on automobile supply chain management. Many fun hands-on activities were incorporated into the workshops. The most popular were the car competition challenge and clean room suit demo.
This program is a wonderful introduction to STEM fields. It demonstrates the relationship between concepts from each of these disciplines to the real world, and generates excitement for future careers in these fields. This program is one example of the enrichment programs offered at SDCS.
