Ouch! My back! If you have ever uttered these words, you’re not alone.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, back pain is the leading cause of disability and missed work in the U.S. and results in a cost of $50 billion annually. The reality is an estimated 80 percent of adults will experience a back injury in their lifetimes, and about 10 percent will suffer a re-injury. In particular, low back symptoms have hindered humans for ages.
An ancient Greek physician named Hippocrates (460BC – 370BC), once said, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” Some consider Hippocrates The Father of Medicine, and others regard him as The Father of Spinal Surgery. In a time when human pain and suffering was considered the will of the gods, he postulated something radically different. He believed in the spine. We tend to agree with him.
So, what causes back pain? Some causes are genetic, while others are degenerative. Even more causes of back pain are linked to lifestyle and/or injury. These cover most, although sometimes the root cause can be described as unknown origin. At Ease the Pain Physical Therapy, we try to dispel the mystery.
Our belief is in a systematic approach to evaluating the lumbosacral spine. With the help of your physician, we conduct a thorough sacral, pelvic and lumbar evaluation. Once your assessment is completed, we focus on all discovered improper alignments, and begin to level your body’s foundation, using a variety of manual techniques.
Think of your body as a suspension bridge. If the foundation of that bridge (sacrum and pelvis) is not level and stable, the tower (spine) will be weakened, and this could cause the bridge to eventually fall apart. At Ease the Pain Physical Therapy, it is our belief the dysfunction of subtle interactions between the sacrum, pelvis and lumbar spine is the primary cause of a large percentage of back pain.
As described above, lumbosacral problems can be quite complicated. A thorough hands-on evaluation is absolutely necessary to peel back the layers and identify potential problems.
