As Northeast Mesa residents begin their annual spring-cleaning, George Robbins, of Eagle Electrical Services, reminds you to check those small things, which tend to add up later.
“Electrical issues aren’t the kind of things we typically picture,” said George. “But a little preventative maintenance can reduce your energy expenses.”
The first items on your checklist are ceiling fans. While ceiling fans technically do not lower your home’s temperature, they create movement in the air, making it feel cooler. You want to make sure they are properly installed and the wires are tight. If not, you could be wasting energy, as well as the extra costs related to the inefficiencies. So, before increasing your ceiling fan usage, it makes sense to make sure they are in proper working order.
Spring-cleaning also is a great time to convert your old incandescent light bulbs to more efficient LED bulbs.
“Incandescent bulbs for lunch are out there, but the supplies for them are dwindling, as LED becomes the go-to for lighting,” stated George. “They offer more savings in the long run.”
Reducing the heat generated by those outdated incandescent bulbs also can keep your air-conditioning costs down. George also suggests checking with your power company to see if they offer any rebates for converting to the more efficient bulbs.
When was the last time you peeked inside your electrical panel? After putting a lock on that box on the side of the home, most of us forget it is even there. But we shouldn’t. It is the heartbeat of the home. Without it, nothing works.
“The amount of dust blown around here in the desert is cause enough,” said George. “It’s always a good idea to periodically blow out all the debris that collects inside the panel.”
Also check the panel wires. The extreme temperatures between the winter and summer months also can do a number on them. The dry winter air and cooler temperatures make the wires brittle, while they soften during the summer heat. These changes can cause the wires to become loose and not function properly.
If any of these checklist items seem too daunting, George and the team at Eagle Electrical are here to help. Give them a call, and ask how you can ensure your home is operating at maximum efficiency.
