With nights getting cooler, pool water temperatures drop rapidly, just as daytime temperatures are getting perfect for outdoor activities, including swim parties.
Once the water gets below 75 degrees, however, most Arizonans find it too cold for swimming, even though a solar cover helps for a while.
“Your pool is a big investment in family recreation,” said Chris Quam, owner of Arizona Pool Guy Inc. “If you can’t use it comfortably in summer and winter, you’re missing out. You’re basically wasting your pool. It’s kind of like keeping an expensive car parked in the garage all winter.”
According to local utility companies, it only costs about $50 a month to heat an average-size, covered swimming pool if you have a heat pump installed. Heat pumps for pools work on the same principal as heat pumps, which heat and cool your home. Gas heaters cost about four times more to operate, but work faster, and are a good option if you only want to heat your pool occasionally for parties or winter visitors.
Once your heat pump is installed, it only takes about two days to bring the water temperature up from 50 to 85 degrees. “You and your family and friends can swim in warm water for months, while your neighbor’s unheated pool goes unused,” Chris said.
If you’ve thought about installing a pool heater, now is the time to do it. “During October, we are having a fall special of $3,995 on heat pumps, and we’ll add a free solar pool cover for anyone who contracts to do a heat pump installation this month,” Chris said. “The discount price includes delivery, installation and startup. It also includes a 50-amp breaker, hookup and plumbing.” The only additional cost is the installation of the length of electrical wire run between the breaker box and the heat pump location.
“There’s also an option to add a pool cooler for the summer months that can lower water temperature 10 to 15 degrees,” Chris added. “Our units also have additional digital controls, which can be used with a wireless remote system.”
“We’ll always come out and give a free estimate for a heating/cooling system or any type of pool service needed,” said Chris.
