While it certainly is possible to purchase an air conditioning system online to save money and skip having someone come to your home to give you a quote, you may want to consider a few things before making a final decision.
For example, our systems run about 6,868 hours each year to keep us comfortable, which is a lot of run time. Although any system will probably cool your home, you may want to take a deeper look and consider:
- Will the unit perform efficiently (as designed)?
- How much will it cost to run (over the long haul)?
- How long will the unit last?
When you buy online, your choices typically are limited and based on your current system. According to a statement posted by Energy Star, “…nearly half of all HVAC systems are incorrectly installed.”
If the unit you are replacing failed or is inefficient, why would you buy a new one based on the old one? It just doesn’t make sense. Here’s why.
Technology has changed, and with those advances, there are changes in how systems must be installed to ensure proper function. Changes also address energy efficiency and promoting longer equipment life.
Before we (or any good company) recommend a system, we perform a complete in–home evaluation. We look at your current system and the structural needs of your home, including ductwork, insulation and a host of other things. Then, we factor changes in building codes and manufacturer installation requirements.
All this information is used to determine which system will fit your needs, and it is the only way to ensure the systems recommended will be sized and installed correctly.
A Word about Warranties and Guarantees…
Most sales presentations focus your attention on the price. Very often, they tell you only what equipment will be installed, but don’t state the standard by which it will be completed.
Also, some companies use the manufacturer’s warranties as their guarantee. In truth, warranties only cover the equipment—they do not cover the quality of the work or your satisfaction with the performance of the system. Always ask what is covered by the guarantees, and get it in writing.
After the Install…
Some companies are in it only for the sale. After the installation, you are on your own. Even the best system, installed correctly, must have regular maintenance to keep it running efficiently, and it is required by most manufacturers to keep warranties in place. A good contractor will offer services to take care of your needs long after the sale.
