Before hiring a contractor to work on your home, there is a lot to consider, and it starts with deciding which company to trust.
Here are some things to ask:
What is the company’s history and reputation? A quick Google search should provide information about the company, including how long it has been in business and where it is located. Check out the reviews and Better Business Bureau listing. Keep in mind that a few negative reviews may not be a bad thing. When you read a bad review, consider the content and focus on how the company responded.
Is the company licensed and insured? There are companies out there doing work that they are not licensed for, potentially putting your family and the value of your home at risk. Ask for copies of licenses, and verify they are current. In addition, ask for proof of insurance. They should have both liability and workers’ compensation insurance with adequate coverage. If there is an accident while company representatives are in your home, insurance protects not only the company and their employees, but you as well. If a company isn’t insured (or doesn’t have high enough coverage), you could be held liable.
What is and is not included in the quote? Quotes may look and sound alike, but the differences can be huge. In fact, what is not stated is as important as what is. For HVAC, one of the biggest differences (often not stated) is whether or not the old components, such as fittings, valves and safety switches, will be replaced. Cutting corners will lower the cost, but could lead to early system failure and expensive repairs down the road. Any quote provided should state, in detail, everything included.
