The transition to middle school is met with both excitement and apprehension by parents and students alike.
The three major concerns parents have for their children’s transition to middle school are academics, safety and social growth. Self Development Charter School (SDCS) administration staff, and faculty are dedicated to addressing these three areas, and ensuring each student’s transition to middle school is a successful one.
SDCS is well known for its rigorous academic program, and provides an unparalleled college preparatory program. Students are able to enroll in classes traditionally taken in high school, such as algebra II, geometry, biology, chemistry and literature. The foreign language program is a hybrid class, combining traditional classroom and online learning. This program is offered through Middlebury College, and prepares students for future distance learning experiences. Many SDCS graduates enter high school honors and Advanced Placement programs. Others complete high school requirements within two years, and begin earning college level credits.
In addition to a commitment to each student’s education, SDCS staff and faculty ensure the well-being and safety of each student. SDCS provides a safe and protected environment whereby students have freedom, as well as responsibility. Teachers serve as advocates and mentors for students, responding to their social and emotional needs. Their role of advocacy strengthens the positive relationships between students and teachers.
In addition to receiving a high quality academic experience, SDCS students have many opportunities for social growth, healthy competition and new experiences through extra-curricular activities. SDCS offers clubs, including Sports Club, Foreign Language Club and Dance Club. Students prepare to participate in the Grand Canyon State Games.
Other students enter academic competitions, such as Math Counts and Science Bowl. Every spring, students showcase their creative spirits, performing in class plays, as well. A rigorous academic program, caring staff and faculty and various extra-curricular opportunities help develop well-rounded students who are well prepared for high school.
Self Development Charter School is a publicly funded, accelerated school, which has received Arizona’s excelling school ranking ever since it became eligible for such a ranking. Teaching one grade level above the Arizona standards, SDCS is one of the top performing schools in the state.
