While it is common for doctors to prescribe antibiotics for sinus infections, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) feels it is often unnecessary and might even be dangerous.
According to the CDC, “When sinusitis is caused by a virus or irritation in the air (like cigarette smoke), antibiotics will not help it get better. Acute sinusitis almost always will get better on its own. It is better to wait and take antibiotics only when they are needed. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed can be harmful.”
Each time you or your child takes an antibiotic, the bacteria that normally live in the body (on the skin, in the intestine, in the mouth and nose, etc.) are more likely to become resistant to antibiotics. Common antibiotics cannot kill infections caused by these resistant germs.”
According to Dr. Lynn Pangburn, a chiropractor at Red Mountain Chiro-Med, there will be lots of people who don’t believe a chiropractor can help with a problem like this. However, her patients notice immediate drainage and the ability to breathe better. Not only do the sinuses drain, but so do the Eustachian tubes in the ears.
“There are always those patients I can’t help because of polyps or some physical obstruction in their sinuses, but by and large, more than 85 percent notice relief almost immediately,” stated Dr. Pangburn. “I am not curing a bacterial or viral infection, just assisting drainage, which decreases inflammation and speeds recovery.”
One study shows chiropractic helps improve healing. Visit the study at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed%20/22036532%20on%20Pubmed.com.
“It’s such a safe and easy remedy to a painful problem that my patients would rather use this than take a drug, which just might make them resistant to the next superbug coming along,” Dr. Pangburn said.
