Come hear stories and ask questions with some of baseball’s greatest athletes and coaches on Thursday, March 8, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Apache Wells Country Club.
The fourth annual Baseball Hot Stove special event is designed to raise money for Sunshine Acres Children’s Home, located in Northeast Mesa.
“We get together and talk baseball, while hosting an auction of sports memorabilia to help offset the expenses of housing, food, clothing, education and care at Sunshine Acres Children’s Home,” said Bob Didier, event sponsor and former major league player, coach and scout.
Bob, a Major League Baseball legend who is a former coach of the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees, lives in Mesa and formed a passion for Sunshine Acres five years ago after visiting the children’s home. “I was very touched at what I saw,” he commented. “Sunshine Acres is just a really special place.”
Since his enlightening experience, Bob and John Hiller, a former Detroit Tiger, decided to raise money using baseball as a theme, he recounted.
The rest is history. This year, Bob has put together an impressive list of dedicated supporters, including two legendary panelists—John Hiller and Bill Buckner, a former first baseman who has enjoyed a 22-year major league career. Other notable legends who have participated include player Albie Lopez, Cleveland Indians and Arizona Diamondbacks, and A.J. Pollock, Arizona Diamondbacks. Special guests will include Dave Stewart and Shea Hillenbrand, a two-time all-star.
Entry is free, and cocktails begin at 6 p.m. Donations will be accepted. Bob invites the whole community to come and enjoy some baseball activities. “Bring your family,” he said.
