When Kayla Miller completed a writing assignment creating an alternate ending for Roald Dahl’s The Landlady, she had no idea her piece would be one of the first place narrative winners in Mesa Public Schools district writing contest.
A student at Smith Junior High School, in LeAnn Napoleone’s class, Kayla was surprised when she found out she won. The foundation for her writing skills was formed during her years at Zaharis Elementary School. At the same time, she found her passion for writing horror pieces. As a matter of fact, her fourth-grade teacher, Miss Barton, gave Kayla her first A grade in a writing assignment, which was horror-based.
Kayla’s ideas are in her head, as well as in a journal. She loves imagining forestry places where her characters can come to life. Inspirations come from music, science fiction books and movies, such as I am Legend. Once her pencil starts, she just writes and rewrites, revising and editing as she goes along. “Ms. Napoleone has been an absolute huge help with my grammar,” said Kayla.
“Winning this award has given me more belief in myself,” Kayla said. Her winning entry also was published in Voices 2014, the Mesa Public Schools Student Writing Anthology.
Congratulations to Kayla and to all fellow winners.
