pose and avoid injury.
The truth: Everybody is different
As yoga teachers, we often hear people state all the reasons why they would love to do yoga, closely followed by their concerns and fears. Common concerns are, “I’m not flexible,” or “I can’t even touch my toes.” Fears always are valid, but none of them, especially these examples, should hold anyone back from trying yoga.
Truth is everybody is different, and there is a wide range of reasons for doing yoga. Not many people are born with flexibility or perfect alignment. It’s something that takes time, sometimes years, to improve. The truth is it will never be perfect. We are all born with different shapes and sizes. This includes joints, bones and attitude—well, just about everything. The only thing to do is to take a chance, and let the body be the guide. Be willing to try.
Proper alignment usually is the best place to start.
Whatever type of yoga practice, there are some guidelines to follow to ensure proper alignment and advancement.
Honor the body, understanding strengths and limitations. Know there are always ways to modify a pose. Instructors always are there to provide modifications. Ego and competitiveness should not enter the yoga room. Yoga is an ongoing and lifetime practice, and should be surrounded with openness.
