Self Development Academy (SDA) is a highly acclaimed kindergarten through grade 8 public charter school, providing each student with an exceptional education.
SDA delivers an accelerated curriculum, which is a minimum of one year ahead of Arizona Department of Education Standards in a nurturing environment.
Given the students’ and school’s consistent successes over the years, Superintendent Dr. Anjum Majeed received a grant to open a sister school within the city of Phoenix.
Last month, SDA—Mesa, kicked off its 16th year, while SDA—Phoenix began its first year. Both school’s Back-to-School Night events were well attended by students and their families, eager to meet their teachers, visit their classrooms and the school campuses, as well as connect with other families.
Parent and family support has contributed to the many accomplishments of SDA—Mesa. Parents and family members demonstrate their commitment to children’s education and SDA in countless ways, and we wanted to take this time to acknowledge our families.
Parents support their children’s educational experience by assisting with homework assignments, overseeing school projects, and participating in the Parents as Partners Reading Program. According to a parent, “…because of the accelerated curriculum, children benefit from parent involvement at home, such as reading daily and reviewing homework concepts.”
Several parents and family members volunteer within the classrooms regularly, reading and practicing math facts with students or assisting with art projects or the annual class play. Mrs. Fran Kuck, a retired teacher of 25 years, states, “I love it. I have enjoyed volunteering in my grandchildren’s classrooms for the past two years, and practicing reading skills with the students.” Others volunteer their time by helping with special events, such as Movie Nights, the Fall Festival and the Holiday Shoppe.
Another way parents volunteer their time and talents is through the Parent Advisory Committee. This committee organizes fund-raising events for the school. Much of the money raised has been used to purchase laptops for the classes.
SDA—Mesa families were extremely supportive of a second campus opening in Phoenix. Many families referred other family members and friends to this new school. Other supplies and monetary contributions toward the lunch program to support the opening of the school. We greatly appreciate the encouragement and support of our families as the SDA community expands.
